Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Aslan Karatsev – 2021 Australian Open Men’s Singles Round of 16

Saturday February 13th, 2021 / 9:15pm EST

Twentieth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada faces unseeded Russian Aslan Karatsev in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday February 13th, 2021 at 9:15pm EST. They have played twice before, each winning on one occasion.

Can Karatsev continue his giant-killing form and cause yet another upset? Or will FAA advance to the Quarter-Finals here for the first time?

Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada has long been considered a future top 5 player on the ATP Tour. Currently ranked 21, he has been as high as #17 before and is incredibly still only 20 years old. He has already had some top 10 wins in his young career and is very consistent at tournaments, but is still awaiting his breakthrough first ATP title win. He has a huge all around offensive game with a big serve, dominating opponents from the baseline. He has been in outstanding form here in Melbourne, reaching the Round of 16 without dropping a set. His Third Round win over fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov was particularly impressive and he will be full of confidence heading into this match against an unfancied opponent.

Aslan Karatsev is currently ranked #114 and has produced some magical tennis here in Australia. Entering this event as a Qualifier, he has also reached this stage without dropping a set, destroying Egor Gerasimov for the loss of only one game and shocking the tennis world by defeating number 8 seed Diego Schwartzman in the Third Round. He has definitely made the rest of the draw take note and he is certainly not to be taken lightly. He has a huge serve and groundstrokes and will be looking to take the game to the favored Canadian star. On paper he doesn’t have much of a chance but in his current form anything can happen.

While Karatsev is in amazing form, I see his fairytale run ending here. FAA has a very similar game style to the Russian but does everything just a little bit better. He also has more big match experience and I believe he will win a close match in the end. Karatsev can keep it interesting but expect him to fade. FAA to win.

Roby’s Pick Felix Auger-Aliassime to win.
