Daniil Medvedev (4) meets MacKenzie McDonald in the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open on Monday, February 15th 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev be able to come back to his best form after a troublesome third round match, or will MacKenzie McDonald be able to cause the shocking upset here in the fourth round?
MacKenzie McDonald was able to come through a very tough opponent in the third round, beating the big swinging South African, Lloyd Harris, in straight sets 7-6/6-1/6-4. McDonald was able to maintain his composure in that extremely tight first set, which then allowed him to win the mental battle which then saw Lloyd Harris crumble for the rest of the match. McDonald did play well yes, but he will also have to recognise that his opponent was tough only in his eyes of quality. McDonald will have to drastically improve his level here if he is to get anything out of one of the toughest opponents on tour at the moment, Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev extended his winning streak to 17 matches, by beating Filip Krajinovic (28) in the third round, beating the Serbian in 5 sets 6-3/6-3/4-6/3-6/6-0. Daniil Medvedev was dominating the match for the first two sets and it was looking like he was going to wrap the match up in straight sets. However, he let this get to his head and stopped concentrating. This led to a slippery slope and a few angry moments in the third and fourth set, which allowed Krajinovic to get back into the match. In the fifth set, Medvedev finally regained his composure and absolutely destroyed Krajinovic and put him back in his place, serving him a 6-0 bagel.
This is going to be the third meeting between both players, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-0. Medvedev has dominated all matches they played, and he has not lost a set against McDonald. Although Medvedev lost some form in that third and fourth set, he will not make the same mistake here. I expect Medvedev to want to come out here, prove the doubters wrong after his third round match, and get the job done against a much lesser opponent in MacKenzie McDonald in straight sets.
